Lost Season 3 Summary

Bypassing an explanation of season 2's dramatic conclusion (an insight that the island was found by the outside world) season 3 begins with Jack, Kate, and Sawyer being imprisoned by the Others at their camp. Jack, Kate, and Sawyer walked into an ambush orchestrated by Michael near the end of season 2. Michael, motivated by the release of his abducted son and a promise of safe passage off the island, duped his friends into their capture. Although Jack, Kate, and Sawyer are confined to what's effectively a labor camp the Others are revealed to be more civilized than previously believed, living in traditional homes with running water, electricity, etc.

Kate and Sawyer's romantic relationship becomes out in the open while tensions between Jack and Sawyer mount as a result of ongoing sexual tension between Jack and Kate.

Following the extreme magnetic field release that was part of the final few minutes of season 2 Desmond, who was closest to the epicenter, finds himself in London in 1996 - possibly reliving his past. Desmond's memory of his time on the island is cloudy at best and he goes about a normal 1996 existence that includes failing to land a job with his fiance's father (Charles Widmore) who is a very powerful businessman.

A series of paranormal events culminate in Desmond meeting a mysterious woman (Ms. Hawking) who informs him that the universe has a way of "course-correcting" itself. Exactly what this means is extremely unclear but it's evident that it's a huge clue for the viewing audience. Desmond gets bumped on his head, is knocked out, and suddenly finds himself coming to on the island (in 2004)- only now more confused than ever.

All of the Survivors and presumably all of the island's inhabitants are learning to collect themselves following the surreal white light that engulfed (at least) the island at the end of season 2.

Benjamin "Ben" Linus, leader of the Others formerly known as Henry Gale, needs Jack's help with a serious medical condition. Much to Ben's surprise he's developed a spinal tumor and as fate would have it Jack just happens to be a successful spinal surgeon from Los Angeles. Jack's reluctant to save the life of his capture that has already killed some of his friends so he secretly devises a plan for escape.

Away from the Others base camp the other Survivors are going about their business and organizing a rescue mission for Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. Eko becomes the second victim of the increasingly inexplicable smoke monster (arguable the biggest mystery of the show).

Back where the Others are holding Jack hostage he intentionally causing a surgical complication while operating on Ben that results in Jack holding Ben's life hostage in exchange for the release of Kate (the women he's interested in) and Sawyer (Jack's friend that is newly involved with Kate).

A new rescue party is formed to save Jack who remains captured.

Desmond has a new heightened sense of awareness since being near the epicenter of the magnetic release. Desmond inexplicably begins receiving visions of future in blurry snippets. Desmond's most serious vision involves Charlie drowning. Desmond confides his fear that the predetermined fate can't be escaped to a now freaked out Charlie.

On their mission to save Jack a small group of Survivors discover the Flame (another DHARMA station) and the lone dweller (Mikhail) at the Flame who purports to be the final living member of the DHARMA Initiative. Mikhail is quickly outed as a dangerous character and after a skirmish the Survivors take him hostage (Mikhail eventually escapes).

Jack and Juliet (Other and confidant of Ben's that has betrayed him) scheme to escape the island by stealing the Others' lone submarine, the only known way to get to or from the island.

Based on an unexplainable intuition Locke is convinced that there is a divine reason why everyone is on the island. Furthermore he believes anyone leaving the island would be detrimental to the purpose of their collective presence on the island. Locke, with the help of some dynamite, blows up the lone submarine that appears to be the only means of leaving the island.

Jack and Juliet flee to the beach to meet up with the Survivors while Locke chooses to go off with the Others in an attempt to better understand the mystical nature of the island (Locke was a paraplegic before landing on the island and is now able bodied).

The Survivors are initially distrusting of Juliet but through Jack's endorsement and some other smaller tests she eventually largely wins them over.

Sun, a pregnant Survivor from Korea, is cared for by Juliet, a fertility doctor before coming to the island. Juliet confides to Jack that for unexplained reasons women can't give birth on the island and die during the birthing process. Unable to procreate the Others are slowly dieing out. Concerned over their sustainability the Others tricked Juliet into coming to the island years ago for her fertility expertise.

Desmond, partially aided by insights gained from his glimpses into the future, finds a parachuter (Naomi) claiming to have come from a freighter send to look for the Survivors. This is a tremendous plot development as outsiders have now found the island. Naomi informs the Survivors that the media has already reported (and has video) of Oceanic Flight 815 (their flight) sitting on the bottom of the ocean with no survivors. Naomi further explains that she was hired by Penny Widmore, Desmond's very rich (read ample resources), finance to find Desmond, whom you'll recall came to the island long before the Survivors crashed there. Naomi eventually explains that her rescue vessel is a freighter located about eighty miles offshore. Believing they are finally saved the Survivors are understandably ecstatic.

Meanwhile with the Others Locke passes a series of tests and is beginning to be recognized as the heir apparent to lead the Others. Locke unquestionably is in tune with the island on a level few others are.

Locke learns (and so does the audience for the first time) of a very mysterious leader of the Others known only as Jacob who appears to be several rungs higher up the chain of command than Ben. Locke demands Ben take him to see Jacob and after much debate Ben finally reluctantly agrees.

The revelation of Jacob is a critical development of the entire storyline. It also marks a signature Lost moment when the audience's eyes are opened to a much larger realm of possibilities that go well beyond the narrow view of the Lost universe they previously had.

Jacob, a very supernatural and mysterious character speaks directly Locke in a broken message that pleads for help. Ben had previously been the only one who could see Jacob and becomes enraged with jealously over Locke's quick hierarchical accent over himself. Ben's discontent leads to his shooting Locke in the stomach shortly thereafter and leaving him for dead.

Back at the beach Naomi explains that in order to communicate with her ship the island's jamming signal will need to be disabled. Charlie volunteers to swim to the recently discovered underwater DHARMA station (Looking Glass -located off the coast) to dismantle the jamming device.

Ben learns of Naomi's arrival and claims of rescue and believes her story and motives to be lies. Jack, anxious to get off the island, strongly disagrees with Ben.

Locke, regains consciousness after being shot by Ben earlier. Locke awakens to a vision of Walt (of all people) informing him that the freighter and Naomi are there "to kill them all."

Lost Season 3 Closing Scene

Inside the underwater station the Looking Glass after much blood shed Charlie acquires to code to disarm the radio jamming signal. Just before an explosion that kills Charlie he makes brief radio contact with Penny as soon as the jamming signal is disabled. Penny barely has time to warn Charlie that she has no knowledge of Naomi and her alleged rescue ship. In Charlie's final few seconds of life he's able to relay the message "Not Penny's Boat" in an effort to warn the Survivors that they've been deceived and have no idea what they're dealing with.

Charlie message is relayed too late and not even Locke can stop Jack from placing the call to Naomi's offshore freighter.

The season ends with almost all the Survivors believing that their rescue is finally imminent.

Closing Thoughts on Lost Season 3

Contact with the outside world and potential rescue are set to be dominant themes for season 4.

Charlie's death in the season finale was difficult for many Lost fans to cope with as he was a very likable character.

Locke's ever growing connection with the island and the emergence of the almost God like Jacob island leader will be prominently for the remainder of the series.

As is often the case with Lost it seems that every time one question is answered three more arise.

For better or worse you'll see these season summaries getting progressively longer as the series gets progressively more complex. Despite the growing length these are still the briefest complete Lost season summaries available.
