Lost Season 2 Plot
- Exploring/understanding the Hatch (formally known as the Swan Station)
- Mystery of the number sequence 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42
- Pushing the button to "save the world"
- Additional Survivors from the broken off tail section of the plane
- Getting to know the group of apparent natives known as The Others
- Understanding the DHARMA initiative & specifically various island stations
Picking up where Lost season 1 ended the Survivors explore the hatch to find that it has an occupant (Desmond) as well as creature comforts like electricity, indoor plumbing, and a fully stocked pantry.
Desmond informs the Survivors that every 108 minutes the old dilapidated 1970's style computer in the hatch (which is actually called the Swan Station) must have the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 manually punched in or "the world will end." Curiously even Desmond doesn't know why or how the world will end if the numbers are promptly punched in every 108 minutes. (The plot thickens.)
Ultimately the Survivors trust Desmond's crazy instructions and push the button in shifts. While occupying the Swan Station the Survivors find vintage 8mm film strips that seemed to have served as orientation video for previous occupants as many as several decades ago. The most informative piece of information learned from the film strips is that there are several other stations scattered around the island that are somewhat similar to the one they're currently occupying.
Elsewhere on the other side of the island Sawyer and Michael encounter previously undiscovered additional survivors of their plane crash. These survivors were sitting in the tail section of the plane that broke off and landed in a completely separate area of the island. Eventually through much turbulence (pun intended) the tail section Survivors unite with the Survivors that we got to know and love in season 1.
During season 2 much more is learned about the the Others but as more is exposed even more questions are brought up. The Others are clearly hostile to the Survivors but there true intentions and history are never clearly defined.
Two of the Survivors (Locke and Eko) discover a second station (the Swan being the first) called the Pearl. The Pearl station looks to be primarily for monitoring the other stations via closed circuit surveillance cameras. This is the second of what will eventually be numerous other stations found by the Survivors.
The Survivors with the help of Rousseau capture an Other that goes by the name "Henry Gale." The character known as Henry Gale remains mysterious during season 2 but will go on to play a very large part in future seasons. Henry Gale's character is ultimately released in what is essentially a prisoner exchange in which Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley are deceived by Michael into being imprisoned by the Others.
Henry Gale turns out to be the Others leader.
Season 2 concludes in typical high drama last fashion as the entering of the all important number sequence is neglected. Desmond realizes that the last time the numbers came dangerously close to not being entered was the day that the Survivors plane crashed. Desmond surmises that entering the code every 108 minutes is necessary to release built up magnetic pressure. When the pressure isn't realized in regular intervals the result is a cataclysmic disaster of epic proportions resulting from the overheated magnetic field erupting.
Desmond frantically goes into the floor to find a last minute fail safe key and barely turns it in time to avoid complete annihilation. The results effects are still tremendously intense as the viewers at home only seen everything vanish as it's swallowed up in a blinding white light that is accompanied by a shrill buzzing sound.
Cliffhanger: Lost Season 2 Closing Moments
During the season's closing couple of minutes a seemingly unrelated scene opens in which scientist appear to be doing polar research in frigid environment. An anomaly in seismic patterns is observed (presumably at the same moment that the magnetic field was released on the island), the scientists rush to phone to calling in the news. On the other end of the phone sitting in London we see Penelope, Desmond's long lost very affluent fiance, receiving the call on which the enthusiastic scientist simply reports, "found it."
Closing Thoughts on Lost Season 2
Season 2's dramatic conclusion leads us to believe that people in the outside world are actively looking for the Survivors and island but are presumably having a very difficult time locating it. Furthermore it appears that locating the Survivors won't be done with a routine fly over but rather through plate-tectonics or some other advanced scientific study of the Earth.
Flashbacks continue to be the critical vehicle for communicating back stories while Survivors wrestle with romantic relationships and coming to grips with an indefinite life on the island.
The Others are appearing to be increasingly evil and complex creatures. While never overtly stated it's very evident that they know far more about the mystical nature of the island and its dark history than the audience or the Survivors know.
